For Roselyn, dairy farming has always been more than just a livelihood—it’s a passion. However, turning this dream into reality was a constant struggle due to extreme poverty. Her home was on the brink of collapse, infested with termites, and barely offering shelter. The old roof leaked so badly that she had to move in with her son, a situation she found uncomfortable.
United Kenya Rising (UKR) stepped in at her time of greatest need. Through UKR’s support, she was able to construct a new semi-permanent mud house, a dignified latrine and bathroom, and a separate kitchen, significantly improving her living conditions.
With a stable home, Roselyn could finally focus on her passion—agribusiness. UKR provided additional support by constructing a cowshed and pigsty and purchasing a piglet to start the agribusiness. She nurtured the pig to maturity, sold it, reinvested in more piglets, and gradually expanded her livestock, as she bought a cow and 3 goats. Over time, she has been able to purchase a heifer, which has since grown into a strong bull. She now has two bulls.
Roselyn is currently a thriving livestock farmer, keeping cows, pigs, and goats. She has ambitions to venture into poultry farming and aims to maximize her agribusiness potential. The financial independence she has gained brings her immense pride.
“I largely depended on my children for survival, and I felt like a burden,” she says. “Now, with the profit I earn from selling my animals, I can even support some of my grandchildren when their parents face difficulties. I am positive that poverty will not define my generation.”
