Rose, a vibrant 50-year-old widow, mother of four and grandmother, embodies the belief that learning
knows no age limit.
With only basic sewing skills, Rose seized the opportunity to refine her craft at Bunyala Central county
polytechnic. UKR supported her with fees and purchasing scholastic materials needed for the course.
This leap wasn’t just about professional development; it was about fulfilling her passion and sustaining
her family.
Rose now reaps big since she has established a tailoring business at her home. Rose sews school
uniforms for primary and secondary school students in her village. She also makes Ankara clothing for
interested clients and handmade Ankara bags. From students to working mothers, the community relies
on her for quality, affordable clothing and repairs.
It is this newfound expertise that has empowered Rose to meet her family's needs. The profits from the
business helps her pay school levies for her children in school as well as buy food among other basic
needs that her children require.
UKR supported her in purchasing a sewing machine and Ankara materials for her tailoring business
which she said has been of significant impact since it provided a sense of accomplishment.
Purity, Rose’s daughter puts it that, the UKR program erased despair and brought hope to the family.
“We no longer depend on well-wishers.”
Rose is now confident that even though her husband passed away and left her with the heavy burden of
taking care of her children, UKR has given her a new sense of belonging through the livelihood support it
gave her and now she is confident that she can take care of her family and propel it to financial
sustainability.
How the skill of tailoring changed Rose’s family, struggle to strength.
