A fatal road accident left Margaret Butichi, mother of four children unable to walk. She sustained a broken limb and several fractures. Margaret was admitted in hospital for several months where she underwent two surgeries. However, her situation hardly improved.
Shortly after the accident, Margaret’s husband passed on after a short illness. It was after his demise that she was enrolled in UKR’s program. UKR supported in areas agriculture, basic needs, education and majorly on health where she received financial and psychosocial support since she had lost hope of getting better.
While in our program, she further underwent several surgeries and later doctors recommended a physician who greatly helped her to full recovery. The therapy proved to be of help and Margaret regained the ability to walk again.
UKR further supported her to acquire the recommended orthopedic shoes which helped her gain balance when walking.
Agriculture wise, despite her condition, Margaret received support from close friends and with guidance from UKR’s agricultural officers and she was able to cultivate her land and get food for her children.
She is also grateful for the education support her children received.
“UKR helped me to find ground once again, especially with the education of my children after my husband’s demise. Through education support, my two children graduated from universities as teachers, and one is almost completing high school, I’m forever indebted,” she says.
Margaret can now do some lighter tasks on her farm, like sprinkling fertilizer on crops and feeding the chicks she rears. What makes her happier is when she gets to see off a visitor to the road, which is a few meters away from the home. She can also attend social gatherings, including her children’s school meetings and also church meetings. Her prior immobility denied her this chance.
She is optimistic that soon, she will be able to start a livelihood to be able to support herself and improve her homestead, now that she can move around with no pain.
