At 18, Sharlet has set her eyes on the bigger picture that lies ahead of her, the likelihood of joining university in a few weeks’ time. Since childhood, she has looked upon that day when she will get admission into university and fulfil her longtime dream of becoming a teacher.
This, she said places her at a prime spot of being an agent of change both for her family and society at large. Sharlet has been an ardent supporter of access to quality education.
She holds her hopes in high esteem that the chance to study at Kaimosi university opens windows of opportunities for her to push forward her aspirations of making sure students get the best education. She is a firm believer that “education is the greatest equalizer” and how best to actualize that than to become a teacher.
Looking back at her past life, she cannot believe that she has come this far. After her father passed on, things became hard at home as the mother was forced to fetch for the family considering she had no formal source of income.
Through UKR’s intervention, things drastically took a turn for the better and Sharlet received the much needed education support which helped her excel in her high school exit exams KCSE. Sharlet acknowledges that UKR’s support made her have the most memorable moments in high school.
“I felt well taken care of in high school. I got everything I needed for learning. In school I made good friends. I went to outings in universities like Maseno and MMUST where I learnt a lot of things.”
The family was also supported through our family care model. Sharlet’s mother often received capital to boost her kiosk shop business which she sold household items. The profits enabled the mother to provide basic needs for the family.
Sharlet’s family is positive that with UKR’s support, she is a step closer towards achieving her academic ambitions.
