On September 15, 2022 UKR organized a free eye clinic in collaboration with Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Optometry department at our Amalemba offices.

A total of 107 people benefited from the clinic including those in UKR program and those from the neighboring communities.

Patients with eye conditions like presbyopia, refractive error, squints and cataract received services like visual acuity, refraction, fundoscopy and consultancy on how to manage their conditions. Patients who needed eye glasses received them free of charge. The eyeglasses were an in kind donation thanks to John Lucente and his Lions Club colleagues.

Davis a primary school student and also a beneficiary of UKR education program hailed the initiative saying the eye glasses he received will help improve his studies and grades as he will be able to read comfortably.

“I had grit in my eyes. Whenever I bent, my forehead would pain me. They have given me eyeglasses and drugs. It will help me see, write and read well,” he said.

Andrew Wekesa a Consultant Optometrist who led the team of Optometry students in offering consultation, vision screening and eye examination services commended UKR’s effort on the clinic terming it as one that will help greatly improve people’s eyesight.

Caroline Kario an Optometrist lauded UKR for organizing the event saying it was good and helpful to the community.

“It’s good for the community. Eye care has been neglected in most cases and such organizations can help the community a lot through these initiatives,” said Caroline.

Through the clinic MMUST optometry students were able to give back to the society by offering free services to our Community. We appreciate the University for adhering to our courtesy.
