As the 2025 planting season draws near, farmers are eagerly preparing their fields in anticipation of the long-awaited rains. To equip them with the best agricultural practices, our Agriculture Department recently organized practical planting demonstrations in our four newly established zones: Shikoti, Ilesi, and Virhembe in Kakamega County, and Gisambai in Vihiga County.
The goal of these demonstrations was to educate farmers on smart-farming techniques that can improve productivity and ensure better harvests. During the sessions, farmers gained knowledge on proper land preparation, including the best practices for clearing, plowing, and enriching the soil.
They also learned about selecting high-quality, drought-resistant, and fast-maturing seeds suitable for their regions. Additionally, the training highlighted the importance of crop diversification to maximize land use and income, as well as the effective use of both organic and in-organic fertilizers to enhance soil fertility and boost yields.
In attendance were key stakeholders from seed companies who shared expert knowledge on improving the quality of farm work. They emphasized the importance of proper crop spacing to prevent competition for nutrients and sunlight, ensuring healthier plant growth.
Farmers were also guided on efficient farm layout for easier management and higher productivity. Pest and disease control was another critical topic, with stakeholders stressing the need for strict treatment schedules to safeguard crops throughout the season.
Furthermore, they discussed climate change adaptation strategies, such as conservation farming, to help farmers to continue thriving even during unpredictable weather patterns.
