‘When all else is lost, the future remains’. This is quote that has kept Raymond Evusa going despite how bleak life was to him. Raymond 19, was brought up by a single mother, being the last born in a family of 7. His childhood life had a lot of challenges as his mother depended on manual jobs to get money for their basic needs.

Aiming at changing the family struggles, Raymond knew it was only through education that he could become successful. Despite the situation at home, he focused on his primary education so that he could get better grades that would earn him a chance to proceed with secondary school.

With his impressive set of mind, Raymond produced excellent grades in his high school entry examinations (KCPE), taking third position in his school.

United Kenya Rising absorbed Raymond under high school scholarship program and supported his four years in school. “High school life was amazing with the support I received, I was able to focus on my academics, thanks to UKR,” he said.

Despite losing his mother when he was in freshman year of high school, Raymond collected himself up by striving to achieve his set targets in academics. He produced outstanding performance in his high school exit examinations (KCSE).

When growing up Raymond had ambitions of becoming an agricultural expert, an influence he got from his grandparents who practice diversified agriculture despite their old age. The passionate part of it being his involvement in helping his grandparents with farm work.

His dreams are taking shape as he set to pursue Bachelor Degree in Agricultural Extension with Education at the University of Nairobi.

Raymond intends to use the new skills he will acquire in the university to impact the society especially in the field of agriculture. His motivated mindset towards what he wants in life is a clear indication that he is determined individual with a bright future.

“With the current climate change that is affecting agriculture globally, I plan to use the knowledge and skills after successfully completing my course on coming up with possible solutions that will help adapt to the new changes for better production,” he noted.

Raymond spends his free time reading books and articles, a culture he developed while in high school which saw him improve on communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal. This enabled him to be a great public speaker, giving him a chance to join the school’s journalism club which annually produced the school magazine.

Beside journalism club, Raymond also plays rugby. He played in his school rugby team up to county level. A skill he says makes him physically fit.

Raymond is grateful for the support he has received throughout his four years in high school. UKR has further supported him to join university and he is quite promising to give back to the society. With his nephews and nieces at heart who are struggling with school fees, he hopes to also support them once he is financially independent.

“He is quite a selfless guy who likes sharing the little he has with others,” noted Mary, his grandmother.
