Dorothy Shilwatso is a social worker working with United Kenya Rising (UKR). She’s truly passionate about empowering families, protecting children, and fostering sustainable community development. She firmly believes that with the right support, every family can flourish.
2. What do you think made you stand out for the Staff of the Year award 2025?
I think my consistent presence in the field, my commitment to following through on initiatives, and the strong relationships I’ve built with families played a big role in this recognition. I always aim to balance compassion with accountability and commitment, ensuring that our interventions lead to real, lasting change.

3. What inspired you to become a social worker in a charitable organization like UKR?
My inspiration stems from a genuine desire to help vulnerable families in a meaningful and sustainable way. UKR’s holistic approach to tackling poverty resonated with my values and fueled my determination to contribute to long-term community transformation.
4. How does your typical day as a social worker look like?
A typical day for me includes visiting households, engaging with caregivers, monitoring children’s well-being and education, documenting progress, and collaborating with community stakeholders. Every day is purposeful, dynamic, and focused on helping families achieve self-reliance.
5. What is the most exciting part of your job?
The most thrilling aspect of my work is witnessing growth, seeing families gain confidence, children thrive in school, and caregivers take charge of their own development journey.
6. What is the most unexpected challenge you have ever encountered while in the field?
One of the most surprising challenges I’ve faced is dealing with deeply ingrained beliefs that hinder behavior change. These experiences have taught me the value of patience, cultural sensitivity, and the importance of building trust.
7. What is the most rewarding experience you’ve had while working with families?
The most fulfilling moment for me is witnessing families transition from a place of vulnerability to one of stability. It’s incredibly inspiring to see parents become empowered decision-makers and children given the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.

9. Share with us any simple community engagement trick you have discovered through experience.
The power of genuine listening. When families feel truly heard and respected, it builds trust, paving the way for meaningful change.
10. Any social work practice you think can make a difference for the vulnerable families you serve?
Strength-based case management is essential. By recognizing and building on the existing strengths of families, we can accelerate their progress and uphold their dignity.
11. How do you know a vulnerable family with great potential?
You can spot these families by their commitment, openness to learning, consistent engagement, and their willingness to take responsibility for their growth, even when resources are limited.
