When United Kenya Rising (UKR) officers first visited Linnet’s home to conduct an assessment, her family was facing immense challenges. Her son, Bilgram, urgently needed heart surgery, which the family could barely afford, and school fees for her children were a constant strain.
The future seemed bleak. The starting point for the UKR’s officers was to help Linnet activate her medical cover, which luckily took a short period to cover the medical expenses.
To stabilize the family, the officers noted that since a stream passed through Linet’s home, a fish pond could be established. Linnet, eager to start a livelihood venture, embraced fish farming fully.
UKR supported her with money for the fish pond construction and also helped to purchase fingerlings, which have since grown into mature fish, and ready for harvest. The family is positive that the fish pond will become a lifeline for them, and offer a sustainable source of income and stability.
Bilgram, now healthy after the successful surgery, plays a key role in managing the fish pond. His enthusiasm is evident as he spends time feeding the fish, cleaning the pond, and regulating water levels. His active involvement has lightened Linnet’s workload and she is able to do other projects at home.
Linnet’s venture into fish farming has not only provided food security but has also opened new opportunities. She plans to smoke the fish for sale at the local market, having discovered that demand for fish is high while supply is limited.
Many villagers travel to the next market to buy fish at higher prices. Linnet’s business idea aims to fill this gap by providing affordable fish to the community while boosting her income.
In addition to fish farming, Linnet has ventured into poultry farming. “I want to be a jack of all trades, as long as I have the resources, I plan to venture on as many projects as I can,” she cheerfully says.
